Scatterplots with Linear Non-linear & No Associations

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb

Students will represent numerical data on a scatterplot and then describe the relationship between the variables as linear or non-linear. If the relationship between the data is linear, it will have a positive association, trend or correlation, a negative association, trend, or correlation, or no trend or correlation. A positive association, trend, or correlation in the linear relationship means that as one set of data increases, so does the other set of data. Also, both sets of data decreasing is also representative of  a positive relationship. In a negative relationship, as one set of data increases the other set of data must decrease and vice versa. The terms association, trend, correlation, and relationship, can all be used interchangeably.

Example

Use the data in the table below to create a scatterplot to determine if the relationship is linear or nonlinear. Justify your thinking.

What is a Scatterplot?

TEKS

Supporting Standard 8.11 Measurement and data. The student applies mathematical process standards to use statistical procedures to describe data. The student is expected to:
(A) construct a scatterplot and describe the observed data to address questions of association such as linear, non-linear, and no association between bivariate data
