Attributes of Shapes & Dilations on a Coordinate Plane

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
Students must look at two similar shapes on an x, y graph for similarities as well as other characteristics between the two similar figures. Students should understand that similar figures have congruent angles and sides that are proportional and similar figures are produced from dilations. Students should know that a scale factor greater than one will produce an enlargement in the figure, while a scale factor less than one will produce a reduction in size.

Example

A small hexagon was graphed on a coordinate plane. Describe how the hexagon was dilated to create the larger hexagon and justify your thinking.

TEKS

Supporting Standard 8.3 Proportionality. The student applies mathematical process standards to use proportional relationships to describe dilations. The student is expected to:

(B) compare and contrast the attributes of a shape and its dilation(s) on a coordinate plane
