Students must use what they previously learned in seventh grade related to lateral surface area and total surface area to make connections to the formulas to solve problems that involve determining the lateral surface area and total surface area of rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders. Students must have a strong understanding of a net of a particular shape to make connections between finding the area of each part of the shape and how adding those parts together can lead to the use of the formula involving the perimeter of the base shape. Students must be able to substitute the correct area formula for B, the area of base figure.
