Determining Volume of a Rectangular Prism

T.I.P.S.

Lightbulb

Students must be able to figure the volume of a rectangular prism when given the lengths of the sides, the number of unit cubes in the area of the base, and the number of layers in the prism.

Example

Jaime’s dad sells baseballs online. When he orders them, they come in a bucket. When he sells them, he puts them in boxes with dividers shaped like cubes to separate the baseballs. Then he puts 3 of those boxes in a case for shipping purposes. How many cubic units of baseballs can he put in one case?

TEKS

Supporting Standard 5.6 Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to understand, recognize, and quantify volume. The student is expected to: (B) determine the volume of a rectangular prism with whole number side lengths in problems related to the number of layers times the number of unit cubes in the area of the base
