Representing & Solving Problems Involving Area Perimeter & Volume
T.I.P.S.
Students must be able to create representations and solve problems that involve perimeter, area, volume. Problems may give the dimensions and ask for the appropriate perimeter, area, or volume. Problems may also give some dimensions with the perimeter, area, or volume and ask for the missing dimension.
Example
Lupe wants to build a raised garden (in the shape of a rectangular prism) in her back yard so she can grow some herbs and vegetables. The garden’s dimensions will be 1.4 meters long by 2.2 meters wide by 0.5 meters high. She plans to fill the garden frame all the way to the top with special garden dirt. How much dirt will she need? Create a pictorial representation for the problem and explain your thinking.
