Solving Multi-Step Problems Involving the Four Operations
T.I.P.S.
Students must be able to create representations of problems that require more than one step to solve. They must use a letter for the missing number, as well as a problem-solving model incorporating a variety of tasks.
Example
Read the problem situation below. Solve and write an equation including a letter in the equation to represent the missing amount. Explain your thinking. Chip and Jo sold tickets to a party celebrating the grand opening of their new store. They sold 250 tickets that were $35 each and 200 tickets for $45 each. After all of the money was accounted for, how much more money came from the $45 tickets than the $35 tickets?
