Composing Two-dimensional Shapes

T.I.P.S.

Lightbulb

The student must be able combine two, three, or four shapes to create a new shape in more than one way if possible. Students must be able to describe their figures and explain their thinking.

Example

Read the statements below. You will need paper and pencil. a)  On your paper, draw a similar triangle. Draw lines to show how you can form the shapes below with this shape.

example

 b)  Use the formal geometric names of the shapes to explain the example you drew in a).

1.6 Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to analyze attributes of two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional solids to develop generalizations about their properties. The student is expected to:

 (F) compose two-dimensional shapes by joining two, three, or four figures to produce a target shape in more than one way if possible
