Addition & Subtraction Strategies
T.I.P.S.
The student must be able to explain in their own words the strategies they use to solve addition problems with sums less than 20 and subtraction problems of related facts. Student must be able to model their thinking using objects such as linking cubes and counters, pictorial models such as open number lines and strip diagrams, and number sentences.
Example
Read the following problem situations. You will need paper and a pencil. a) Mom bought 8 balloons for Bella, and 6 balloons for Jim. How many balloons did Mom buy? Explain your solution and thinking on your paper using words and pictures. Write a number sentence to show how you solved the problem.
b) Six flowers bloomed on Friday. Some more bloomed on Saturday. There are now 13 flowers that bloomed. How many flowers bloomed on Saturday? Explain your solution and thinking on your paper by using words and pictures. Write a number sentence to show how you solved the problem.
