Basic Addition & Subtraction Fact Strategies
T.I.P.S.
The student must be able to add two whole numbers whose sum is less than 20 and subtract related facts in a similar manner. They must be able to apply basic fact strategies, including combining or breaking apart two numbers to form a sum of ten and must be efficient in using the basic facts to solve problems arising in everyday life.
Example
Write a number sentence and share your thinking about how you solved the problem. You will need paper and pencil.
a) Sam has 8 pennies in his hand and 6 pennies on the table. How many pennies does Sam have?
b) Mrs. Kennedy baked 15 loaves of bread for the party. Six loaves were burnt, so she threw them away. She brought the remaining loaves to the party. How many loaves of bread did she bring to the party?
