Comparing Numbers Using Symbols
T.I.P.S.
The student must be able to use the greater than symbol (>); the less than symbol (<); and the equal to symbol (=) to record the results of their comparison of two whole numbers up to 100. Students should be ready to explain their thinking using a place value model or an open number line.
Example
a) Compare the base ten blocks and use >, <, or = to complete the number sentence. Explain your thinking.
b) Terry has 25 marbles. Will has 16 marbles. Who has more marbles? Use <, >, or = to complete the number sentence and explain your thinking.
