Rounding & Using Compatible Numbers

T.I.P.S.

Lightbulb

Students must be able estimate solutions by rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000 or using compatible numbers. Estimation is one of the techniques mentioned in the process standards.

Example

The Harris family has an orchard of pecan trees. Last week, they processed 21,673 pounds of pecans. This week, they processed 27,325 pounds of pecans. They had to pull out 198 pounds of pecans that were damaged and could not be sold or used. About how many pounds of good peaches did the Harris family get to sell? Explain your thinking and how you determined the solution.

TEKS

Supporting Standard  4.4 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop and use strategies and methods for whole number computations and decimal sums and differences in order to solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected to: (G) round to the nearest 10, 100, or 1,000 or use compatible numbers to estimate solutions involving whole numbers
