Decomposing Fractions with the Same Denominator

T.I.P.S.

Lightbulb

Students must be able to decompose a fraction in multiple ways. They must show it as a sum of fractions that have the same denominator using a variety of models. Finally, they must be able to communicate the results with symbolic representations.

Example

Mrs. Boyd told her students that they could earn bonus points for every correct way that they showed how to decompose 7/5. You are now one of Mrs. Boyd’s students. Earn the bonus points by showing three different ways to decompose 7/5, and show your solutions using symbols.
