Comparing Numbers
T.I.P.S.
Students should use their knowledge of numbers and comparing sets of objects to describe the comparative relationship using written numerals. For example, if a student is using a deck of cards and turns over a 4 and 8, the student should be able to state that 8 is greater than 4 or that 4 is less than 8. In Kindergarten, students are not using the comparative symbols such as <, >, or = as that occurs in first grade.
Example
June has 8 pencils in his pencil box. Johnny has 4 pencils in his backpack.
a) Who has more pencils? Share your thinking.
b) Who has fewer pencils? Share your thinking.
