Students must use their knowledge of counting to understand the concept of nested numbers, meaning each prior number in the counting sequence is included in the set as the set increases or decreases such as 13 is 12 increased by 1 or 13 decreased by 1 is 12. Students should be to understand this concept with the use of counters, linking cubes, beans, a hundred chart, etc.

Read the following word problems. You may need paper and pencil. Solve the problems and explain your thinking.

a) Anthony baked 10 cookies. His brother ate one. How many cookies were not eaten?

b) Jordan had 12 sandwiches to take to his class. His aunt gave him one more in case someone dropped one. How many sandwiches does he have to take to his class?
