Decomposing Two-Dimensional Shapes

T.I.P.S.

Students should use their prior knowledge of shapes from kindergarten and first grade to be able to take apart two-dimensional shapes such as cutting out a square from a rectangle, dividing a shape in half, or separating a rectangle into identical triangles. Students must be able to identify and describe the resulting parts using formal and informal geometric language.
