Decomposing Two-Dimensional Shapes
T.I.P.S.
Students should use their prior knowledge of shapes from kindergarten and first grade to be able to take apart two-dimensional shapes such as cutting out a square from a rectangle, dividing a shape in half, or separating a rectangle into identical triangles. Students must be able to identify and describe the resulting parts using formal and informal geometric language.
Example
a) How many different ways can the rectangle be divided into fourths? Name and describe the new shapes that you made.
b) How many lines in the figure below to make new shapes. Name and describe the new shapes that you made.
