Measurement

In First Grade

Previously in first grade, students measured the length of an object to the nearest whole unit and number. Students also measured length by using two different units of length such as an inch and a centimeter. Time to the hour and half-hour using analog and digital clocks was also learned.

In Second Grade

Students in second grade determine solutions to a problem involving length, and find the length of an object to the nearest unit using meter sticks, measuring tapes, yardsticks, or rulers. The concept of area is first explored in second grade as well as the concept of telling time to the minute using analog and digital clocks.

In Third Grade

Next year in third grade, students will determine the perimeter of a polygon, add and subtract intervals of time, and determine the appropriate time and tools to use measurements of liquid volume (capacity) or weight.
