Finding the Area of a Rectangle Using Models

T.I.P.S.

Students should be able to cover a rectangle with square units such as color tiles, unit cubes, base-10 flats, square sticky notes of various sizes to find the area to the nearest whole unit. Students should recall from their experience with length that the smaller the square unit, the more square units needed and the larger the square unit, the fewer square units needed.

 The model below represents the length and width of a rectangular exercise mat. 

 What is the area of this mat in square meters? Explain how you determined the solution.
