Representing Whole Numbers as Distances on a Number Line
T.I.P.S.

Students should use their prior knowledge and exposure to number lines to be able to represent equally spaced whole numbers on a number line and determine the distance by the number of whole units between the starting point and ending point. Students should understand that a number line is represents the distance from zero and the scale of the number line can vary depending on the distance between the tick marks.
Example
Use the number line shown to answer the following questions.

a) What number is represented by Point A on the number line? b) What is the distance between Points A and B?
c) What is 40 less than Point C?
