Generating & Solving Problems when Given a Number Sentence

Students should be able to create a real-world problem situation (word problem) from a given number sentence that involves adding and subtracting two- and three-digit numbers. They must be able to model, solve their problem, and be able to explain their thinking on how they solved it.

Example

You will need paper and pencil to complete the following questions.  a)  Create a problem situation (word problem) for the following number sentence.
                    477 + 118 - 129 = ?
b)  Model your problem using a strip diagram, explain how you found your solution, and explain your thinking.
