In First Grade
Students in first grade instantly recognized structured arrangements, skip counted by twos, fives, and tens to 120, and determined 10 more and 10 less of a given number. Students also compared numbers to 120 using place value, open number lines, comparative language, and used concrete and pictorial models to compose and decompose numbers to 120 in more than one way. Students compared numbers to 100 using symbols.
In Second Grade
Second grade students compose and decompose numbers to 1,200 using concrete and pictorial models in more than one way, generate a number that is greater or less than a given number, and locate a given number on a open number line. Students also use standard, word, and expanded forms to represent numbers to 1,200, and use comparative language, numbers, and symbols to compare and order numbers to 1,200.
In Third Grade
Next year in third grade, students will compose and decompose numbers up to 100,000, compare, order, and represent numbers using comparison symbols, and use a number line to represent numbers. Students will represent fractions using strip diagrams, number lines, concrete objects, and pictorial models, represent equivalent fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 using objects, pictorial models, and number lines, and compare two fractions having the same numerator or denominator.
