Locating a Given Point on a Number Line

T.I.P.S.

Lightbulb

Students will use their prior experiences related to number lines to locate the position of a given number on an open number line. An open number line begins as a line with no intervals or tick marks and no positions or numbers labeled as students create their own using tick marks and positions as needed. Open number lines help students show their number sense by being able to display the magnitude of numbers and the place-value relationships among numbers when locating a given number.

Example

What is the number that is 120 more than 198? Show your solution on an open number line.
