Using the Cent Symbol Dollar Sign & Decimal Point

Students should rely on their previous exposure to identifying and counting coins. Students should be familiar with writing the value of the coin collection with a dollar sign and decimal as well as with a cent symbol. When using the dollar sign and decimal, students should understand that the decimal represents the word and. For example, $0.78 would be read as zero dollars and 78 cents.

Alexa has these coins in her pocket. She wants to buy some items at the store.
a) How much money does she have to spend?
b) Name one toy that Alexa can buy with her coins and explain your thinking.
c) Name one toy that Alexa cannot buy with her coins and explain your thinking.
