Volume of Rectangular Prisms Triangular Prisms Rectangular Pyramids & Triangular Pyramids

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
Students should use their prior knowledge of three-dimensional shapes from previous grade levels to identify the differences between rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, rectangular pyramids, and triangular pyramids in order to find the volume of each of those shapes using a formula. This does not mean that students need to memorize each of the formulas. Students need to have an deep understanding of why the formula works and how the formula relates to the measure (area and volume) and the shape.

Example

The dimensions of a triangular pyramid are shown in the diagram. What is the volume of the triangular pyramid in cubic centimeters?
