Adding Subtracting Multiplying & Dividing Rational Numbers

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
Students must use their knowledge from fifth grade where students fluently added and subtracted positive rational numbers and from sixth grade where students multiplied and divided positive rational numbers to use all four operations with rational numbers including negative rational numbers. Rational numbers the set of numbers that can be expressed as a fraction, where a and b are integers and b ≠ 0, which includes the subsets of integers, whole numbers, and natural numbers (–6, 0, 8, etc.).

Example

Steve has 6 3/4 pounds of ground beef to make hamburgers for a party. It takes 3/8 pound of ground beef to make one hamburger. How many hamburgers can Steve make if he uses all the ground beef?

Possible Solutions

TEKS

Supporting Standard

7.3 Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to add, subtract, multiply, and divide while solving problems and justifying solutions. The student is expected to:

(A) add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers fluently
