Calculating Unit Rates

T.i.P.S.

Students will calculate the unit rate, which is the ratio between two different units where one of the terms is one, from rates, which are a multiplicative comparison of two different quantities where the measuring unit is different for each quantity. Unit rates may be found in problems involving speed, density, price, and recipe measurements. Rates may be in the form of symbolic such as 2/4 or 2 to 4, or verbal such as for every, per, or for each. Students must also use their knowledge converting between and within measurement systems such as customary and metric.

Example

In the weekly newspaper, Central Grocery Store has their ads for the week. One ad is showing a 12-pack of soda for $4.56. What is the unit price for a can of soda?
