Relationships Between Sets of Rational Numbers

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
In order for students to understand this standard, they must first know the definitions of whole numbersintegers, and rational numbers and have a firm grasp of these. This will help them classify numbers they are given, or demonstrate relationships between these types of numbers. For example, they must understand that whole numbers are ONLY positive values, integers can be whole numbers or have negative values, and rational includes whole numberintegers and parts of a whole.

Example

The following image shows the relationship between I, integers, and R, rational numbers.

Supporting Standard

(2) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to represent and use rational numbers in a variety of forms.

The student is expected to extend previous knowledge of sets and subsets using a visual representation to describe relationships between sets of rational numbers.
