Center Spread & Shape of Data Distribution
T.i.P.S.
For this standard, students will be describing the data based on graphical representations. The types of graphic representations might include dot plots, stem-and-leaf plots, histograms, and box plots. Students need to practice with a variety of data in order to gain understanding of these concepts. Conversations about their findings will help students gain confidence and begin justifying their reasoning for the center, spread, and shape and what these them about the data.Example
A 6th grade class was surveyed as to how many hours they watch TV per week. The results are shown in the box plot below. What can you conclude about the center, spread and shape of this data?

Supporting Standard 6.12 Measurement and data. The student applies mathematical process standards to use numerical or graphical representations to analyze problems. The student is expected to:(B) use the graphical representation of numeric data to describe the center, spread, and shape of the data distribution
