Mean Median Range & Interquartile Range

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
Students are expected to calculate the center of the data and its spread. This means they will be asked to find the mean and the median. They must also calculate and understand two measures of range, the range and the interquartile range (IQR).

Example

The table below shows the number of students participating in athletics at Hope Middle School over the past 7 years.

table showing athletes per year

What is the interquartile range (IQR) of the data?

Readiness Standard

6.12 Measurement and data. The student applies mathematical process standards to use numerical or graphical representations to analyze problems. The student is expected to:

(C) summarize numeric data with numerical summaries, including the mean and median (measures of center) and the range and interquartile range (IQR) (measures of spread), and use these summaries to describe the center, spread, and shape of the data distribution
