Area Equations of Rectangles Parallelograms Trapezoids & Triangles & Volume of Rectangular Prisms
T.i.P.S.
Students will be using the modeling they did related to modeling area formulas and decomposing and rearranging parts of shapes to now writing equations for solving for area and volume of shapes. In order to do this, students must understand the formulas and what they represent. Measurements students are given can be any positive rational number, therefore, they need to practice with a variety of whole numbers, decimals, and, fractions in order to understand this concept.Example
Johnny needs to determine the volume of the new fish tank his family bought for their house. The tank and measurements are shown below. What is an equation that Johnny could use to determine the volume of his fish tank? Justify your thinking.

Supporting Standard 6.8 Expressions, equations, and relationships. The student applies mathematical process standards to use geometry to represent relationships and solve problems. The student is expected to:(C) write equations that represent problems related to the area of rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles and volume of right rectangular prisms where dimensions are positive rational numbers
