Converting Units Within a Measurement System

T.i.P.S.

In order for students to succeed at this standard, they must be able to convert units within the same measurement system, converting feet to inches, but not feet to centimeters. Also, students will need to understand how to use unit rates which is the relationship between the two units. For example, students may be asked how many feet are in 2 ½ yards. In this case, they would use the unit rate of 3 feet per yard to determine the answer. Students will also use proportional reasoning to determine these conversions as well. If there are 60 seconds in one minute, there would be 120 seconds in two minutes because we would multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2.

Example

Each day after school, James rides his bike home, which is a distance of 3.4 kilometers. How many meters does James ride home each day?
