Comparing Additive & Multiplicative Relationships

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb

Students will be comparing rules to demonstrate the difference between additive and multiplicative relationships. In order to do this effectively, students must be able to explain the difference verbally (with words), numerically (with examples in a table), graphically (by showing on a grid) and symbolically (with an algebraic expression). The best practice would be to give two scenarios for them to decide which is additive, and which is multiplicative. Then, students would demonstrate the difference in each of the above mentioned ways.

Example

Which scenario would represent an additive relationship?

   a)  Bobby is twice as old as his sister Jane.
   b)  For every cat in a neighborhood, there are 3 dogs.
   c)  A buy one get one free sale at the mall.
   d)  Jessica has four times the amount of money as Gloria.

Supporting Standard

6.4 Proportionality. The student applies mathematical process standards to develop an understanding of proportional relationships in problem situations. The student is expected to:

(A) compare two rules verbally, numerically, graphically, and symbolically in the form of y = ax or y = x + a in order to differentiate between additive and multiplicative relationships
