Comparing & Ordering Integers and Rational Numbers

Students should practice locating, comparing and ordering a variety of integers and rational numbers, including mixtures of both. Students need to understand the comparison symbols and what they represent, not just that the “mouth points to the bigger number.” Students should not only use both comparison symbols (<, >) but also be able to generate the opposite comparison statement when given one (ex. 5.4 > 3.2 or 3.2<5.4). Students should also practice ordering a variety of three numbers, including a mixture of integers and rational numbers.

Example

Mrs. Smith bought 3 packages of ground beef at the supermarket. The weights of the packages were 2.41 pounds, 12/3 pounds, 22/5 pounds, and 1.62 pounds. Put the packages in order from least to greatest on a number line. Justify your thinking.
