Equivalent Expressions using a Variety of Representations

For this standard, students will be using concrete models, pictorial models, and algebraic representations to determine if two expressions are equivalent. In order to be successful, students need extended practice using each of these methods. However, concrete is always the first step. If students can show this equivalency using hands-on materials (concrete) then they are ready for trying to use a pictorial model (a 2-D representation of this). Once they are successful with those, they will be ready to move to algebraic representations (which include no pictures, only numbers and variables) to solve mathematically. It is very important that students are not pushed beyond each method too soon, as it causes confusion and lack of understanding.
