Identifying Absolute Value

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
For this standard, students will be able to know the opposite of a given value and the absolute value. The opposite value just determines whether it is a negative or positive value, based on a value’s opposite position on the number line. But, absolute value is the understanding of how far that amount is from 0 on a number line (vertical or horizontal). Students should practice getting any of this information and finding the other values in order to become comfortable with all aspects of the standard. Students will be working with ALL rational numbers, so it is important that they practice with values that include parts of a whole as well.

Example

Jacob is trying to identify a number. He knows the following properties of the number:
   •  The opposite of the unknown number is 7.4.
   •  The absolute value of the unknown number is 7.4

What is the unknown number that Jacob is trying to identify?
