Ordering a Set of Rational Numbers
T.i.P.S.
Students must have a basic understanding of numerical order and the difference between a positive and negative value. The most useful way to help students plot rational numbers in order is by using either horizontal or vertical number lines (depending on the context). When students are ordering these rational numbers, the given set can be a variety of whole numbers, decimals and fractions. Also, the given situations for them to use will come from everyday life math contexts (ex. newspaper information, stock market values, temperatures, etc.).
Example
The following table shows the temperature for 5 days in Madison, Wisconsin during the month of January.
Using the data from the table, put the temperatures in order from coldest to warmest.
