Representations of Division including Fraction Notation
T.i.P.S.
Students will begin to represent division as fractions. Do not get this confused with dividing fractions. This standard incorporates fractional representations for division. In other words, if the problem states that 12 candy bars were divided evenly among 5 people, this could be expressed as either 12 ÷ 5 or 12/5. Both expressions mean the same thing. The concept of this standard becomes increasingly important as students begin to move toward Algebra 1.
Example
Dana is having a birthday party. She bought 10 pizzas to share equally among 8 people. What are two equivalent representations that could be used to determine how much pizza each person received?
