Representing Ratios & Percents

T.i.P.S.

Lightbulb
For success on this standard, students must practice representing ratios with models, fractions, and decimals, as well as percents with models, fractions and decimals. The purpose of doing this is so that students truly understand how modeling in these different formats provides the same information. When using concrete models, students should use a variety of models instead of one main one. Concrete models may include 10 x 10 grids, 100 pennies, base 10 blocks, etc. Students should also be able to use the models, fractions and decimals to demonstrate percents above 100% as well.

Example

The following illustration shows how many students in 6th grade passed a recent exam.
