Determining the Perimeter of a Polygon
T.I.P.S.
Students will calculate the perimeter of a polygon if all the lengths of all the sides are known, or calculate a missing length if the perimeter and other side lengths are given.
Example
Valerie’s family is making part of their yard into a vegetable garden. They plan to put metal edging around the garden to keep the grass in the rest of the yard out of the garden. If the diagram below represents the garden, how many feet of edging will they need to put around the garden?

3.7 Geometry and measurement. The student applies mathematical process standards to select appropriate units, strategies, and tools to solve problems involving customary and metric measurement. The student is expected to:(B) determine the perimeter of a polygon or a missing length when given perimeter and remaining side lengths in problems
