Students must be able to determine and justify whether or not sums and differences of fractions are reasonable. They will use benchmarks of 0, ¼, ½, ¾, and 1.
Mr. Mills is teaching his students to think about the problems they have to solve before doing any computation. His purpose is to help them recognize whether or not the actual answers they get are reasonable. The students have been asked to decide if 1 ¾ is a reasonable result when adding 7/12 and 11/12. Explain why you think it is or is not a reasonable result.
